WASTE NOT, WANT NOT
Introducing an organic resource recovery initiative.

The current focus on the Byron Shire’s stressed waste system has made us clearly aware of the importance of sustainable waste disposal and renewal.

ReGenesis Enterprises, a local business, with a local focus is pleased to announce their latest initiative, "Organic Resource Recovery". Known for their commitment to ecological excellence in farming and land use, this initiative will play an instrumental role in alleviating the local waste situation, by turning a problem into a solution.

In close collaboration with [aptly named] Rob Green of Earth Makers, ReGenesis has created a "closed loop" nutrient system, whereby wastes are converted into resources.  The system offers an opportunity to local restaurants and retail outlets that want to share in maintaining a clean [green] Byron Shire.

Eighty large green wheelie bins have been allocated for distribution. The first delivery of bins going to twelve restaurants and retail stores over the next fortnight will store ‘putrescibles’, colloquially known as food scraps, for daily collection by the company’s newly acquired truck.

These 'recovered' putrescibles will be taken [back] to ReGenesis' farm in Myocum and integrated into a [large scale] worm farm set-up, composted and transformed into soil. The company will apply this soil to their organic farming methods and in time produce a variety of market-garden vegetable for sale to participating businesses.

'We call them our green partners', says Andrew Johanson, project manager for this and the company’s Market Garden project. ‘Support from community is pivotal. This system, literally allows us to make it, take it and make it again – zero waste. These food scraps will be transformed into high quality compost. It doesn’t get healthier than this’ he adds and continues to explain how this closed loop system will provide local businesses with fresh produce and simultaneously make a positive environmental impact.

"We've taken our cue from nature in designing our farm system" says Danielle Leonard, General Manager of ReGenesis Enterprises. Nothing is wasted in a rain forest. Everything is connected to the nutrient cycle. We need only change our perception to see waste as a resource. Rather than send organic waste to a landfill, we’re using it to feed our soil in closed loop systems. And in doing this, we’re demonstrating that good environmental sense  can make good economic sense".

'The Byron Shire is known world-wide for being clean and green. The introduction of closed loop systems such as this one will hopefully raise the benchmark in the community and lead the way for other company’s to follow suit and ensure [maintain] the Shire's reputation." says Leonard. ‘The company is currently in discussion with several restaurants in the community. The response is positive' she adds. ‘We welcome like-minded businesses to contact us, explore the possibilities of an alliance and play an active role in contributing to the Shire’s wellbeing’.

The company also seeks like-minded parties to contact them about their "Grow Operative” program. An opportunity for newcomers to the business of organic farming methods, or for existing farmers interested in expanding their business is available. The affordable program includes farm-land and infrastructure as well as administration and marketing support. Asian greens, medicinal herbs, aqua culture and a seeds company are some of the varieties that will do well on the farm.
